Love Our Waterways: Give a Little Love to Bayou Lafourche

Love Our Waterways: Give a Little Love to Bayou Lafourche

In Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou, life is shaped by the water. Bayou Lafourche provides a habitat for wildlife, supports local industries and offers a natural playground for anyone looking to enjoy our great outdoors. Our waterways are central to life here – and that’s why September’s Love Our Waterways Month is the perfect time to show our beloved waterway a little extra love.

This month-long statewide initiative encourages Louisianans to protect the rivers, lakes, bayous and shorelines that are such an important part of Louisiana. The state has roughly 14,400 miles of waterways, and keeping them clean is something everyone can help with.

Our bayou isn’t just beautiful to look at; it’s something that’s meant to be experienced. From fishing and boating to kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, it offers plenty of opportunities to get out and see our parish from a different (read: wetter) perspective. But with enjoyment comes responsibility: helping to keep the bayou clean. Keeping Bayou Lafourche clean means protecting the wildlife that calls it home and preserving the beauty that makes water sports here so enjoyable, all while ensuring future generations can experience the bayou, too!

One of the easiest ways to make a difference this month is to join the Lafourche Parish Waterway Sweep on Saturday, September 19. From 8 a.m. to noon, volunteers will gather at four boat launch locations (Golden Meadow, Lockport, Sanchez and Butch Hill) throughout the parish to remove litter and debris from the water and shorelines. Every piece of trash removed makes a difference!

Ready to help? Sign up for the Lafourche Parish Waterway Sweep HERE.

If you can’t make the Sweep, there are plenty of ways to love our waterways this month … and year-round. Pick up litter when you see it, properly dispose of fishing line and leave the bayou just as beautiful as you found it. Help us to give back to the bayou that gives so much to Lafourche Parish. We hope to see you at the Sweep!
